Basic Types of Beat Making Software

Picture
_ Do you want to learn how to make you own beats, but do not have an idea of where to go?  If so I was once like you. I had a desire to be my own music producer without much idea of where to go to get it done. I had the inspiration, but I hadn’t yet put in the perspiration.

After some missteps, some educational moments and a whole lot of trial and error I think I have begun to be pretty good at this beat making and music producer thing.  I have even sold a couple of tracks.  Okay, I am not claiming that I am by any means an expert right now, but I have passed that beginner stage, and I surely have found I love doing this.

Since the days when I started out, I have played around with quite a few different versions of beat making software. The way I see it, they can be broken down into four basic types of software.

The Four Types of Beat Making Software:

  1. Bad Free beat making programs: No need to talk too much about these.  Some of these programs may have Trojans, bots, adware, malware.  Others may be “clean” but only be teases to buy the “premium versions” (which may be worthwhile).
  2. Good Free beat making programs: There are free programs that are worth your while.  Of course almost none of these programs will give you an output that is “sale ready”. Almost all of them will require you to eventually upgrade to a premium category, but if you want to just play around with beat making and see if it is something that interests you these could potentially be a fine place to start.
  3. Low cost but quality programs: These programs are not going to break the bank… but they get the job done.  They will run you anywhere from $30 to $90. They almost all have decent tutorials to get a new user up to speed quickly.  Most have more than enough bars and sequences to make using them worthwhile.  They all should have drum tracks and the capability to both customize your drum tracks and to import your own sounds. The lower price tag means that they are essentially geared towards new people. In my mind if you are starting out in beat making, this is where you start.Personally, my favorite of these beginner level programs is DubTurbo. {Check out this DubTurbo Review} It has a high end price tag, but the company that puts this product out often gives steep discounts. It is geared to be easy to use for a person just getting started, yet it also has a quality that also really could make it listed as a “high end program”
  4. High end programs: These are the premium programs, as you could imagine.  The costs for these ones range between $200 and $500.  Quite a large chunk of change.  These would be the programs the professionals use. The cost is not the only reason someone getting started should avoid these programs. They also assume you have good knowledge of how to compose music using these systems.  They can be great programs, but they often assume you have knowledge of what you are doing already.  They do not spend a lot of time and effort on tutorials.

What do you do if you are starting out? As I mentioned above, I am quite keen on DubTurbo. I think it is a marvelous program. It seems to be created with a new person in mind.  It has a great series of tutorials and the interfaces are intuitive.

It has a WAV input and output with 16 bit master 44.1 khz sound. This may sound like just another fact.  But it isn’t. Many programs use MP3’s for their  source sounds.  Well… this is bad.  MP3’s are great is you are listening to a track on your IPOD. But it is a compression utility. Compressing and decompressing tracks mean that you will degree the fidelity and sound of the track. If you even have the remotest desire to make professional quality beats, just the fact you use MP3’s at all will kill that desire dead in its tracks.

When it comes to beat making programs and MP3’s, be like an (anti)Nike: Just Don’t Do It

A final lesson on beat making: You are not going to learn beat making by reading these words. You learn about it by getting out there and doing. This Drum Machine Flash Game will show you the extreme basics of beat making.  But the programs you can get will show you much more. As a final note, you can do a YouTube search for {your Program} and beat making samples. Of course some programs are going to trying to sell you on their specific programs many people will post how they created some of their own hot beats.

Get out there and play with a beat maker.  It is the best way to learn. Dubturbo is my first recommendation (as stated before) but any of the best beat making programs will really do the trick.
